The City of Reformation

Debrecen is the third biggest city in Hungary, located in east part of the country, 230 km far from Budapest.

From the time of Reformation to the present day, Debrecen has developed as a cultural and spiritual center of Hungarian Protestantism. With the high standards of the Biblical-humanist, Greek-Latin and empirical-scientific studies, the Reformed College of Debrecen became one of the guardians and lighthouses of sciences in Europe. For these reasons, the city has acquired several nicknames over the years such as The Lantern of Hungary and TransylvaniaThe Calvinist Rome, and The Hungarian Geneva. The University of Debrecen still draws students from around the world to study in its faculties, giving the small city a hip and multicultural feel.

Debrecen is a mixture of both new and old, a combination of historic churches, trendy dining, inviting outdoor spaces, and a friendly population. Debrecen played big role in the history of Reformed Church in Hungary. During the preparations for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Debrecen even received a new nickname from the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe– it is now the  City of Reformation.
